When Caylie Runciman started calling herself BOYHOOD, it was a nod to childhood nostalgia. The alias and the beguiling bedroom anthems are one and the same. Tough-kid guitar grit and deadpan verses give way to whimsical synth lines and delicate harmonies. But there’s a shady layer to Runciman’s perfect pop; her black magic is raw, equal parts ecstasy and heartbreak. Among the bright colors, there’s the joy and the pain in knowing what it means to grow up.
Caylie Runciman lives at the end of a long dirt road in Central Frontenac, Ontario. She has released music under the name Boyhood since 2011, when her lo-fi cassette releases earned her slots at festivals and showcases across Canada and the United States. Her songs are a signature combination of opposing elements: catchy and heartbreaking; relatable and alien.
Runciman’s 2018 album Bad Mantras saw her surveying the fallout of a rough few years by way of sharp songcraft and bold arrangements. Gorilla vs. Bear debuted the record for streaming, hailing it as “subtly brilliant” and “raw and beautiful.” The song “Drivin” – praised as a “gentle rock ‘n’ roller” by Exclaim – was featured in the Netflix series Northern Rescue.
LIAM COLE is a drummer and songwriter from Kingston, Ontario. A remarkably deep and lyrical percussionist, Liam studied jazz performance at Humber College before becoming vibrantly active in the Ontario music community, performing live and on records with Little Kid, Michael Cloud Duguay, Dorothea Paas, Poolblood, HIGHS, Chris Brown & Kate Fenner, and many more.
