Their contemporary jazz sound blends the sophistication of fusion with the warmth of soul, drawing inspiration from timeless artists such as The Crusaders, Randy Crawford, and Nina Simone. Shaped by the diverse musical paths of its members, SoulFire has forged a voice that is unmistakably its own. Band Members
Steve Duben – Bass & Bandleader
A versatile bassist and the driving force behind SoulFire, Steve has performed with Tommy Banks, George Blondheim, Martha Reeves, Al Wilson, PJ Perry, and Gay Delorme, and has recorded with fusion artists Dale Jacobs ( Attic Records) and John Ferraro. His steady groove and musical leadership anchor the band’s sound.
Jon Miller – Drums
A McGill Jazz Performance graduate, Jon has toured extensively across Canada, the US, and Europe, performing in a wide range of genres. His credits include work with Charlie Hunter, Vic Vogel, Hugh Fraser, and Jeff Healey. In addition to his freelance career, he leads his own acclaimed jazz quartet.
Brenda Morie – Vocals & Flute
A superb vocalist and flutist, Brenda has toured, performed, and recorded with artists including Chet McCracken, Nancy Sinatra, Amos Garrett, and the Honourable Tommy Banks. Her impeccable technique supports a delivery that is both heartfelt and effortlessly expressive.
Jan Randall – Keyboards
Jan spent many years as music director for Second City, composing hundreds of original works for broadcast. His performance credits include Otis Rush, Bo Diddley, Amos Garrett, and Gary U.S. Bonds, reflecting a wide‑ranging musical fluency that enriches SoulFire’s sound.
Cliff Maddix – Guitar
A respected performer and educator, Cliff is a former faculty member at Berklee College of Music and Selkirk College. He has played with Frank Gambale, Max Bennett, Wayne Krantz, and Jimmy Haslip, bringing deep stylistic versatility and a rich harmonic palette to the band.
Al (Allen) Jacobson – Trombone
Allen has performed with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Baden Baden Philharmonic (as conductor and soloist), the European Philharmonie, the Citadel Theatre, the Tommy Banks Band, and in productions of Cats, Chicago, Cabaret, and West Side Story, among many others.
He was the 1st/Jazz Trombonist with the nationally acclaimed Tommy Banks Big Band/Orchestra and has been featured on national and regional television and radio. His career spans performances across Canada, Europe, and Asia, and he remains in demand as both a soloist and conductor with contemporary ensembles and jazz orchestras.
Paul Wainwright – Alto & Soprano Saxophone
Paul has performed with Michael Bublé, Kenny Loggins, Stevie Nicks, and Martha Reeves. His long‑running group, the Big Band Trio, toured widely and released four internationally aired albums. His lyrical saxophone voice is a defining element of SoulFire’s signature sound.
