Hailed as “the unsurpassed British glory of the baroque violin” (The Times), Rachel Podger is a leading interpreter of Baroque and Classical repertoire. As an Orion Series in Fine Arts guest artist, Rachel will lead a string masterclass with UVic School of Music string students (11:30AM-1PM) followed by a yoga workshop and Q&A (1-2:30PM)
Known for her expressive artistry and deep insight into baroque and classical repertoire, Podger brings a wealth of knowledge and inspiration to this engaging session. Join for the masterclass to observe the teaching process and gain a deeper appreciation of performance practice and interpretation. The yoga session, designed especially for musicians, will focus on breath, alignment, and mindful movement to support healthy practice and performance. Following the workshop, Rachel will share insights from her own experience integrating yoga into her musical life in an informal Q&A.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Rachel Podger is founder and Artistic Director of Brecon Baroque and the Brecon Baroque Festival, Patron of the Continuo Foundation, and was the first woman to receive the Royal Academy of Music/Kohn Foundation Bach Prize. Honors include Gramophone Artist of the Year (2018) and Ambassador for REMA’s Early Music Day (2020). Her collaborations include the acclaimed project A Guardian Angel with VOCES8, Artist-in-Residence at Wigmore Hall (2019/20), and premieres such as three reconstructed Mozart sonatas with pianist Christopher Glynn. Recent highlights include The Goldberg Variations Reimagined and performances worldwide with ensembles including Philharmonia Baroque and the Academy of Ancient Music. A passionate educator, Rachel holds honorary positions at the Royal Academy of Music and Royal Welsh College and has a relationship with The Juilliard School in New York.
