Rekindling what it is to visit and why it is important for Indigenous and non-Indigenous relationships, with Jesse Wente, Joan Johnson and Harmony Johnson-Harder.

BIOS
Harmony Johnson-Harder is a Cree Metis woman who belongs to the Montreal Lake Cree Nation on Treaty 6 territory in Northern Saskatchewan. She currently resides in Prince Albert.

Jesse Wente is a husband and father, as well as a writer, broadcaster, speaker and arts administrator. Born and raised in Toronto, Jesse’s family comes from Chicago and Genaabaajing Anishinaabek and he is an off-reserve member of the Serpent River First Nation.

Jesse is best known for more than two decades spent as a columnist for CBC Radio’s Metro Morning, first as a film critic and then as a culture critic. He was a regular columnist on Q, Unreserved and more than 20 local CBC stations. He has appeared as a guest on numerous television shows as well as the documentaries Reel Injun, Why Horror? and Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror.

Joan Johnson is a member of the Woptura Tiospaye of the Oglala Sioux Nation. She lived with her late husband, Harold, in an off-grid cabin on his family’s trapline at the north end of Montreal Lake, Saskatchewan, for twenty years prior to relocating to Gabriola, BC in 2020. Joan has had a lengthy career in justice and community development that has included work with Correctional Services of Canada, development of restorative Justice approaches in Indigenous communities, Director of Justice programs with the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres, and as a complex case needs Probation Officer in northern Saskatchewan. Recognized for her experience and expertise, she was seconded to work along with her husband, Harold Johnson, on the Northern Alcohol strategy in January of 2016 until her retirement in 2020. The focus of the Northern Alcohol Strategy is to assist communities to collaboratively reduce the impacts of alcohol-related harms. She currently continues this work as a mentor and consultant.

Joan has been a board member for many non-profit organizations including Elizabeth Fry, Piwapan Women’s Shelter, and North Sask Special Needs. She is a member of Sustainable Gabriola and works with other Gabriolans on the Climate 12-12-12 project to come up with local solutions that focus on adaptation and mitigation. Joan is also a board member with the Gabriola Arts Council.

Welcome to the Second Annual Art of Visiting!
Join us from Monday, October 6 to Thursday, October 9, 2025, for three enriching days of connection across Wolfe Island and Katarokwi/Kingston, Ontario.

We invite Indigenous and Treaty-partner (non-Indigenous) presenters, artists, and cultural workers from across the country to gather on the land for conversations, workshops, and inspiring presentations and performances.

We are honoured to share space with Jesse Wente, Ian Case, Christine Friday, Harmony Johnson Harder, Philip Geller, and many more talented individuals offering their stories and gifts.

This year, we continue to centre being on the land—celebrating the vibrant colours of the harvest season while nurturing a relational exchange of knowledge, creativity, and respectful reciprocity.

The Art of Visiting is free for Indigenous arts sector representatives, and Indigenous presenters are encouraged to reach out to explore available travel, food and accomodation support.

Tickets for Treaty Partners are limited. Donations are welcomed.

Mark your calendars and prepare for three days of inspiration, reflection, and community at the Second Annual Art of Visiting!

This project is funded by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).
