A chilling psychological thriller where innocence confronts the unknown.
“Based on Henry James’ haunting novella, The Turn of the Screw tells the story of a young governess who believes the children in her care are being corrupted by ghosts haunting the house. The opera masterfully weaves melodic vocal lines with alternating themes and keys, mirroring the tightening “screw” of the story. You’ll be left questioning: Are there truly ghosts, or is it all in her mind? This Victorian ghost story, re-examined through a psychological lens, explores the loss of innocence with eerie and thought-provoking depth and musical complexity.” – Artistic Director Brenna Corner, Pacific Opera Victoria
Directed by Michael Shamata and starring the acclaimed Isaiah Bell as Peter Quint, this production will be a mesmerizing experience. You may recognize The Turn of the Screw from its many chilling adaptations across stage and screen. It inspired the classic 1961 film The Innocents and more recently Netflix’s hit series The Haunting of Bly Manor, as well as its reimagining in many ballets, plays, and countless literary works, making it one of the most enduring and haunting ghost stories of all time. Join us for this evening of eerie intrigue and musical complexity that challenges perceptions and stirs the senses.
