About

The Winter in Canada

We’re all in this together on planet earth.

The Winter in Canada are a storm, delivering moments of elemental fury between periods of calm textures in their music. During their live sets, the band administers a raucous alternative rock and roll punk show through waves of guitars and drums.

Originally conceived of as a home recording project by the group’s founder Mark Deen in Toronto in 2015, the band fully formed in late 2018 when Mark moved to the Kingston area. With the addition of Eric Valdez on drums and Steven Stevens on Bass, The Winter in Canada made their live debut in February 2019.

Kingston's The Winter in Canada

The lyrics and music of The Winter in Canada focus on Mark’s experience as a first-generation Canadian, the search for connectivity and the struggle to escape the daily grind, through the lens of infectious guitar melodies, solos, and pop hooks. The Winter in Canada harkens back to their influences, fusing 90’s grunge songcraft with contemporary indie rock and punk lyrics.

"Keys sparsely accompany an acoustic guitar as the beautifully ominous 'Iscariot' gets philosophical, proclaiming 'All we are we hold in ourselves' while my personal favorite 'Computer Computer' slams dating in the digital age with a nicely paced little rocker and snappy chorus. 'Pillar' is the most ambitious track, closing the album with some dramatic Pete Townshend style guitar work."

The band’s name, The Winter in Canada, comes from the band’s desire to align themselves with a universal idea, to act as a signifier in these fractured times, reminding people that there are still common beliefs in this world. Ask someone what they think when they hear the phrase “The Winter in Canada” and they’ll tell you quite simply that it’s cold!

"Powerful voice, powerful songs, blazing guitars, The Winter in Canada make me feel warm."
– Josh Scott, CFRC 101.9 FM

Making their live debut in February 2019 the band has received regular radio play on local radio, CFRC 101.9 FM and CJAI 92.1 FM and was selected to play the 2019 HomeGrown Live Music Festival in support of the Joe Chithalen Memorial Musical Instrument Lending Library.

In addition to stretching their legs as a live act, The Winter in Canada are currently working on a follow-up album, diving deeper into their focus on the political, social and emotional experiences of the world today.

"The songwriting is confident and enthusiasm is undeniable."
