The Winter in Canada are a storm, delivering moments of elemental fury between periods of calm textures in their music. During their live sets, the band administers a raucous alternative rock and roll punk show through waves of guitars and drums.
Originally conceived of as a home recording project by the group’s founder Mark Deen in Toronto in 2015, the band fully formed in late 2018 when Mark moved to the Kingston area. With the addition of Eric Valdez on drums and Steven Stevens on Bass, The Winter in Canada made their live debut in February 2019.
The lyrics and music of The Winter in Canada focus on Mark’s experience as a first-generation Canadian, the search for connectivity and the struggle to escape the daily grind, through the lens of infectious guitar melodies, solos, and pop hooks. The Winter in Canada harkens back to their influences, fusing 90’s grunge songcraft with contemporary indie rock and punk lyrics.
"Keys sparsely accompany an acoustic guitar as the beautifully ominous 'Iscariot' gets philosophical, proclaiming 'All we are we hold in ourselves' while my personal favorite 'Computer Computer' slams dating in the digital age with a nicely paced little rocker and snappy chorus. 'Pillar' is the most ambitious track, closing the album with some dramatic Pete Townshend style guitar work."
