The Spire Competes in National "Next Great Save" Campaign — Community Support Needed
The Spire has been selected to compete in the Next Great Save, a national competition that rallies communities across Canada to protect the historic places that matter most.
Now, Kingston is being called on to take action. We can help save The Spire.
At 174 years old, The Spire is one of the city’s most iconic limestone landmarks and a cornerstone of community life. Home to Sydenham Street United Church, it also serves as a dynamic cultural and community and arts hub, welcoming more than 120 people every day for concerts, rehearsals, festivals, social programs, multi-faith gatherings, and support groups.
But The Spire is at a critical moment.
An aging and increasingly unreliable heating system is putting year-round access at risk—threatening the comfort, safety, and accessibility of a space that so many rely on.
Through the Next Great Save, The Spire has the opportunity to secure funding for a modern, energy-efficient heat pump system. This upgrade will preserve the building’s historic integrity, reduce emissions, lower operating costs, and ensure the space remains open and welcoming in every season. This is more than preserving a building—it’s about protecting a vital community space. We’re competing on a national stage, and we need our community to rally behind us. Let’s show Canada how Kingstonians can come together to win.
The Spire represents a growing movement across Canada—reimagining historic faith buildings as inclusive, multi-use community hubs that support culture, connection, and wellbeing. Every vote, every share, and every show of support will help secure the future of this beloved Kingston
landmark.
