Come for the voice, stay for the feeling
With a voice that blends smoky warmth and effortless charm, Vicki Brittle has built a reputation as a captivating performer who can glides between soulful blues and rootsy folk. Known for her magnetic stage presence and quick wit, she brings both polish and playfulness to every performance—whether in an intimate lounge or a packed live music venue.
Over the years, Brittle has cultivated a loyal following drawn not just to her rich vocal tone, but to the storytelling she weaves between songs. Equal parts seasoned musician and natural entertainer, she turns every set into a shared experience that feels both timeless and refreshingly spontaneous. She plays all Mondays in April as part of the Monthly Musical Residency at The Cove! Details and reservations for the April 13 performance here.
Seamus Cowan: You’ve got this incredible ability to connect with a room—what’s your secret weapon: the voice, the stories, or the charm? Or is it all part of a master plan?
Vicki Brittle: Thanks Seamus! I think my secret weapon is the connection music creates, and creating a safe, open space for everyone to feel seen through the music I'm performing. A lot of my original music is based on my personal life, which offers a sense of vulnerability, which I’ve witnessed many people connect with and share their own stories with me after shows. I will openly admit, I'm not much of a "planner", and I tend to go with the flow- every show is so individual and every show has it's own magic to offer! I think each show is individual depending on the room and audience. Sometimes the voice shines, sometimes the stories shine, but I think the "secret weapon" of it all is the universal language that music is.
Q: If you could go back and perform one song with any artist, past or present, who would it be—and are you stealing the spotlight or playing it cool?
Vicki: Oh! I love this question. I think if I could perform one song with any artist, it would be Stevie Nicks. I saw her live in Toronto years ago, and I was completely mesmerized by her ability to be her authentic self on stage, while still "putting on a show". She's been an inspiration to me since I was young. I would be "playing it cool" for sure, or at least as cool as possible while singing with Stevie Nicks, haha!
Q: Every performer has that gig story—what’s one moment on stage that still makes you laugh (or cringe) today?
Vicki: A recent experience that still makes me laugh, and also cringe a little bit, happened recently. Last November I was in Victoria, BC for a show, and about halfway through my show, one of my overall straps completely came undone and my overalls began slipping. I couldn't do anything but laugh and say "I swear this is not that kind of show- I'm so sorry!". It was well received and the room filled with laughter, but I still think of it and giggle while also thinking "oh my god. As if that happened" to myself.
Q: Your style crosses jazz, blues, and folk—if your music were a cocktail, what would be in it and what would you call it?
Vicki: I think if my music were a cocktail it would be something made from something earthy or something that grows in the wild, and a mix of sweet, complimentary sour, and something that makes you want to order a second one. This past summer I made Black Raspberry infused Vodka from the berries on our property and it was delicious and tasted like some of the feelings I've mentioned. So I'll say homemade black raspberry vodka, ginger ale, cranberry juice, a splash of lemon and a little bloop of honey! I'd call it "Sweet n' Raspy".
Q: When you’re not on stage, what kind of music do you secretly love that might surprise your fans?
Vicki: I listen to mostly oldies, folk/Americana and rock, but when I want to move my body and dance, I love listening to dance or disco music from any era. Like, give it all you got, high energy kind of dance music! I also love the frat-rap genre and rap-rock like The Beastie Boys or IllScarlett! I think every genre of music has something to love in it! Thanks so much for doing this Seamus, these questions are awesome!
