In the summertime, there is such a vibe on the waterside patio and such an opportunity to connect musically with so many different people on so many different levels. Last time Rob Moir was here was before the pandemic. He is continued to tour left right in centre since then I’m sure we’ll connect with so many different people with his refined songwriting and curious lyricism. Reservations always suggested. He will be playing from 5 to 8 PM on Thursday, July 31. Details and reservations here:

Seamus Cowan: Rob, it’s been ages! What have you been doing since the last time we saw you about six years ago? I assume you’ve been writing, recording, performing and touring?!
Rob Moir: Absolutely, I've been writing enough for two albums and steady touring Europe multiple times a year but it's time to hit the roads of Canada again and looking forward to coming back to Cove Inn!
Q: We all have influences that relate to our songwriting, but what are your true influences that inspire you to continue writing day after day? Other particularly some new artists that stand out?
Rob: I started writing songs when I was 14 and the ideas, topics never stopped flowing, I can't turn it off and will write songs for the rest of my life. There is not so much an influence, but more of a compulsion or possibly a command from our alien overlords.
Q: We have sort of a connection connection in that you toured with Neko Case. I used to play in The High Dials who toured with her as well. Do you find that when you tour with a prominent artist, you perform on a different level?
Rob: When I got to open for Neko, I was about two years into a full time touring career and I had 25% of the songs I do now with the same amount of stage time. I won over audiences each night, but it was watching artists like Neko, Frank Turner, and Tim Vantol who inspire me constantly to get better and I try to steal their homework when I get lucky to be on their shows.
Q: I feel like getting your music reviewed by Rolling Stone is a true privilege, and you have had two! Do those types of reviews really affirm what you believe you are doing is artistically true?
Rob: The cool answer is no press big or small clutters my mind about the songwriting process at all. The honest answer is just gratitude that anyone has taken the time to write about my songs let alone even push play, one of the hardest things these days is finding anyone who will make time to check out new music.
Q: I find it so important to be consistent with live music nightly here at The Cove. As a touring, live musician, do you find that things are changing in the musical landscape in terms of places to play live? What are your thoughts on that and where it’s all going?
Rob: In some ways playing out on the road has never been easier thanks to this wonderful technology that connects us, specifically artists to new music scenes or venues in their home and abroad. The same technology is a double edged sword as it has now created a reason to never be bored and possibly never leave your home.
The optimistic side of me thinks—similar to coffee, beer and spirits—enough humans find quality goods which they support, the same will always be true of the live original arts. It just might be a smaller group than before. To me there is nothing better than an artist standing on stage and pouring out their heart through song, comedy or otherwise. It will never get old.
